The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 11th Oct 15

Post by JONATHAN-BARNES »

Today it was me, Clive, John and Len. The fire alarms were tested a usual.

The job today was fixing the refurbished lamp post heads (with LED tubes fitted) to the tops of the lamp posts on the end of platform 3 & 4. The day was one of snags and problems. We wanted to use the tall alluminium step ladders from civil maintenance but these were out somewhere so we decided to use the scaffolding.

The scaffolding is kept under the arches. A load of heavy objects had been placed in front of it and needed to be shifted to get the scaffolding out.

The scaffolding was taken across to platforms 3 & 4 to be assembled. It was found that the rubber feet on the extensions had swollen up due to the dampness under the arches. This made the scaffolding difficult to assemble and even more difficult to dismantle at the end of the day.

Two of the lamp post heads were fitted at the tops of the posts. On trying to fit the third one it was found that there was a screw sticking out, inside of the post preventing the head from fitting where it should fit. The screw was rusted in so it had to be drilled out.

It was found that the earthing on the lamp posts did not comply with required standards and a lot of time was spent sorting this out.

At the end of the day we had put up three of the five heads. The other two should be done next week if the weather allows it.

Our hard work was rewarded by the donation of a big plate of left over cakes and biscuits from a catering train. Most of these were consumed before we knocked off.

:D Brilliant job done there managing to erect three out of the refurbished lamp heads, let's hope the other two are not so difficult to do, but if they all require the earthing sorting out, so be it.

See you all next Sunday.
