Simon the full time ELR electrician asked us to carry on with replacing conventional five foot tubes in the C & W shed on road one with LED tubes. This involves rewiring the fittings cutting out all the redundant wiring to enable 250v to be applied at just one end of the new tubes.
We worked late to complete the row on road one were the staging is, the rest of the fittings are difficult to get to on roads one and two to complete the replacement of all the old fluorescent tubes.
All the white reflectors were also taken off and cleaned of years of dust, they now look white as they are supposed to look, reflecting the light from the LED tubes!
John and myself paid a visit to 80080 in Baron Street works to measure the resistance of the coil in the generator of the Smiths speedometer, we needed that information to enable us to get the Bury Standard 4 Group 80097 generator coil rewound.
After our late lunch break back in the warmth of our workshop, John and myself went back to the BS4G workshop to have a word with Allan the CME re. the generator, whilst we were there we picked up an angle grinder which required a new electrical lead fitting along with a new plug.
This was tested and returned to their workshop, we then compared a Smiths speedometer generator off a DMU unit which was in the BS4G workshop. The generator works OK but is uses a different method of turning from the ones used on BR Standard 4 engines.
It was then decided to take the original generator back to the BS4G workshop to see if Allan could remove the coil assembly from the generator so that we could obtain a price for it's replacement.
A video was taken of the various parts of the generator to enable us to rebuild it in the future.
We did not even have time for a final brew and a void of cakes, back next week for more adventures at the ELR.
