The Electrical Volunteers Report sunday 25-9-2011.

Post by asbibby »

Saturday saw Jonathan in the workshop restoring four bulkhead light fittings, which we are going to fit in the north tunnel at BBS to replace some corroded fittings. The acid smoke emitting from the engines both steam and diesel, plays havoc with the metal and plastic fittings.

On Sunday a full team turned out with me back from holiday, Jonathan and Len went off to check out the fire alarm call points in The Trackside and the booking hall, everything was fine and the findings were recorded.

Ray Butcher paid us a visit to discuss once again were to fit his refurbished works clock, it was decided that Ray would approach the ELR management to see if the clock would be better inside the Bury Transport Museum, we await the outcome!

Simon the full time electrician came to ask us to accompany him down to the C & W shed to evaluate the wiring again on the Santa carriage which is still awaiting refurbished bogies. I noticed when checking underneath the carriage that the steam heating pipe had new pipework fitted at the south end, it was very leaky previously.
It was decided that if some wiring needs to be replaced it would be better if when the carriage gets it's bogies back, it is the moved into the C & W shed and positioned over the pit.

Inside the Santa carriage all the ceiling paneling had been neatly put back in place and the 24 volt light fittings reconnected.
We connected up the batteries and replaced the last fluorescent fitting before breaking for some lunch back in our workshop.

Irene of Santa toys fame asked us to fix a light fitting which had been disslodged in one of the Santa storage vans, this turned out to be a blown tube which was soon replaced.

Back down to the C & W after lunch with our test equipment, we tested out all the 24 volt light fittings to ensure they were all connected up before cleaning, then replacing all the lighting fuses.
The lights were then tested hoping that there would be enough battery life left in the carriage batteries, all the 24 volt light fittings worked OK apart from some duff bulbs which need replacing.
The central florescent light fittings all worked apart from two units, one turned out to be a loose connection and the other fault was no 5 amp fuse in the inverter, these are electronic units that covert 24 volts DC into 240 volts AC one for each unit.
All the lights in the Santa carriage are now working satisfactory.

We all headed back to our workshop for a brew and to discuss which of the Friday night diner trains to go on in October, we settled for Friday 14-10-2011 and booked eight places.

That was it for another day in the life of The ELR Sunday electrical volunteers, next week tiddly winks weekend we will be helping out on the Thomas train.
