The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 31-10-2010.

Post by asbibby »

No Jonathan this weekend so on Sunday we had John, Len, Clive and myself in on Sunday as usual, I reset the BBS station clock and the other time clocks controling the station lights in and around BBS station.

Len and Clive tested out the fire alarm call points in the cafe and BBS.

MV gave us a a talk on the Railway Safety Management System along with a CD each, for all of us to look at in our spare time, all volunteers will have to take part in these talks, a further meeting will take place in November 2010.

Hughie from C & W asked us to check out the fuses providing the 24volts to the ultra violet water purifying system on RMB 1833, fuses were OK so we all boarded the 10:30 train going to Rawtenstall, Clive and Len stayed on the train to alter the clocks up at Rawtenstall, as John and myself dismantled the inverter providing AC power to the ultra violet tube in the water purifier.

We got off the train at Ramsbottom to catch the next train back to our workshop to bench test the inverter, before we could cross the platform Margaret the station master asked us to have a look at the hot water boiler as it was not working, the power to the boiler was on but the neon indicator was not lit, we checked the 240v supply to the boiler which was OK, the neon was duff, but still no power to the element, we checked both thermostats and one of them had tripped out, trip button reset, voltage checked and the boiler works again.

We all caught the same train pulled by Leander back to BBS for lunch.

Ray Butcher dropped by with an original Bury station clock which he has donated to the railway, this will be completely stripped down and rebuilt with modern electronics, stepper motor and gearbox, a project for the winter months.

Just as we were approaching BBS my mobile rang, MV asking us to assist him with a lighting problem on the dining set, we got some spare fuses from our workshop and the avo meter for testing, a blown fuse was found and replaced.

After lunch John and myself set about testing the inverter whilst Clive and Len designed a wiring diagram and got together all the parts needed for the remote operation of the station lights at Summerseat station, we sourced six metres of four wire cable for the photo cell to be erected at Summerseat and wired it up ready for fixing later in the year.

John meanwhile was busy testing the inverter by connecting it up to 24v on our workbench and connecting a flurescent tube to the output of the inverter, it worked so maybe the ultra violet tube in the water purifier is blown?

Another busy day in the life of the Sunday Electrical Volunteer Department.

Re the original clock. It'll need a great deal of TLC to restore it! Perhaps we'll have a go at building an MSF(Rugby) receiver into it this time??

MSF is no longer at Rugby!!

IIRC it is now in Cumbria.

(MSF is the callsign for the Radio time signal used in the UK.)
