The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 16-12-2012.

Post by asbibby »

We nearly had a full compliment of Sunday volunteers on Sunday, I was back from sunny climes and was joined in our workshop by Jonathan, Clive, Len and John.

We received a report that when the Friday diner was stopped at Rawtenstall Station the signal man could not switch on remotely the Station platform lights, to enable the diners to walk on the platform to either stretch their legs or have a smoke.
We then received a phone call in our workshop from Graham of the Telecomms. Department asking us to meet him at Rawtenstall Station as he had some information on the problem, John and Clive gathered up some tools and some spares and made their way up to Rawtenstall on the next Santa train.

The rest of us caught the shuttle up to Heywood Station to sort out some of the Station lights which were not working, all the platform lights were working apart from four and one car park light. The lamp posts are all numbered so a note was made which ones require new bulbs fitting.
A bulkhead light in the waiting shelter was replaced and the shades on both fittings were cleaned, we then turned our attention to the ramp bulkhead lights at the back of the portacabins, one bulb had blown and was replaced, the others checked out OK.
The shuttle was then caught back to Bury Bolton Street Station, were we had lunch and a brew.
Clive and John had also returned from Rawtenstall Station having sorted out the problem which turned out to be a blown 20mm 500ma fuse, this was replaced with a 20mm 1a fuse.
A test on the remote switching of the platform lights proved sucessfull.

In the arches under Bury Bolton Street Station a new fiberglass cabinet had been erected round the electrical switch-gear to try to protect it from all the dampness in the under-croft. When the cabinet was erected the light fitting in the ceiling had been dissconected leaving no light in the under-croft, this was duly rewired, many hands make light work as Confucius used to say!

it had been reported previously that two of the Victorian style lights outside of the Bury Transport Museum were not working, we got the ladders out to cover up the photo-cell on the side of the Museum and noticed that the cast iron cover at the base of the lamp post had been broken and was fastened together with tape.
The bulb was changed first with no success so we checked the fuse in the slider, no fuse someone had removed it.
We have a spare cover so next week we will get access to the switchboard in the Museum and fit a new cover and fuse.

That was it for another Santa electrical standby day, back next Sunday.

We wasted a lot of time at BTM because there were no keys available for the main switch-gear room. And this is not the first time this has happened. I'm sure other keys would not be available. Partly this is a safety issue and partly inconvenience. Next, we'll be finding fire escapes locked.
