The Sunday Electrical Volunteers Report 22-1-2012.

Post by asbibby »

We had a full team out today, Len, Clive, Jonathan, John and myself, we all met up in our workshop for a brew first before collecting all our tools, electric drill, 110v transformer and a variety of screws and fixings.
We had been informed that the roof and outside canopy at Rawtenstall Station had been repaired, this would enable us to refit the refurbished canopy light fitting. The fitting had been tripping the circuit breaker at the station because of water ingress into the light fitting due to the canopy roof leaking.

We all caught the top and tailed train, 44871 black five with 71000 The Duke of Gloucester on the rear, after arriving at Rawtenstall Station we refitted the canopy light fitting and reset the breaker on the fuse board. The lights in the clock tower and the canopy lights are controlled by a photo cell in the clock tower, we asked the Station Master to see iff everything was working when the light faded.

The other job requiring our expertise was the lighting conductors which the vandals take great pleasure pulling the cable from it's fixings down the walls of the station. Two lighting conductor cables were refixed firmly to the walls again, one of the cables was reconnected as it had been ripped out of it's connection with the earth rods.

Lunch was taken in the lovely and warm waiting room in the station, whilst waiting for the next train back to BBS. John and myself got off the train in BBS, Clive, Len and Jonathan went up to Heywood to see if the leaking water valve had been replaced, before we can fit a trace heating element round the valve to prevent freezing.

I went up to Tate Towers to fit a new four foot tube but on arriving there some kind soul had replaced the tube with a new one, two spares were left in the building.

On returning to our workshop the rest of the crew had arrived back from Heywood, so we set to cutting to length carriage plug cable ready to restart the carriage plug refurbishment program. Jonathan had previously stripped and repainted twenty four carriage plug shells, along with cleaning all the brass pins.
This job will keep us busy for the next couple of weeks or so, that was it for another week.

It was good to see the railway very busy with customers and trains left right and centre, it just seemed like Clapham Junction on occasions or so the people were were making things happen, thought so!
Deep in the heart of Swinetown.
