The Sunday Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 16-10-2011.

Post by asbibby »

Jonathan answered the call again to strip down years of paint off carriage plug shells and repaint them gloss black, we are probably about two thirds into this mammoth task of refurbishing the carriage plugs.

Jonathan told us all on Sunday that it was extremely busy on the Saturday with "The Deltic Gathering".

On Saturday Jonathan was asked if we could check out a food display case in the Buffet on platform three/four, myself, John and Jonathan selected some tools and test equipment to see if we could sort the problem.
With so many people around wanting to purchase food and drinks we decided that it would be better to leave this task for next weekend, the display will have to be partly dismantled to effect a repair.
Whilst in the Buffet we were informed that the domestic hot water boiler was not providing any hot water, this turned out to be a burnt out 13 amp plug, the wiring and fuse had disintegrated. John went back to our workshop for a new plug, this was wired up, the fuse checked and the power switched back on. We returned later to see if the boiler was producing hot water, it was.

Clive and John meanwhile were testing out flourescent light fittings brought into our workshop by Ray Butcher, after being repaired and tested they would be fitted in the new wood/store building, in Baron Street Yard. Clive repaired two units and gave them to Ray to fit in the new store. One more double fitting was obtained from our used store and this we took down to Baron Street Shed.

While we were down at Baron Street Shed we checked the time on the works clock, it had stopped and on investigation it was found that it had been unplugged in our electrical store. This clock is on test prior to being erected in an appropriate place, we plugged the control unit back in to the power source.

Irene from the BBS shop had asked us to reset the timeclocks for the security lights in BBS, both clocks were reset and the timings checked.

Jonathan and myself then tested out the fire alarm call points in The Trackside and BBS, everything was OK and we recorded our findings in the log book.

After lunch we caught the train up to Ramsbottom to change an electronic timer that controls the lamp post outside of the signal box in the hours of darkness. This had been causing us a few problems with the light staying on well past the time when it should have gone out.
A pneumatic timer was sourced from our used spares stores and fitted in the signal box, this was tested out satisfactory by Clive, Jonathan and John.

I was on the lookout for our mobile tower scaffold which I eventually found in the steel shed outside of the signal box, we transported all the components back across to the station. The wheels are missing off the scaffold if any one knows were they are could the tell us?
We need the scaffold next Sunday, to repair the platform station lights at BBS.

A station lamp test was done whilst we were at Ramsbottom Station, two lights were found to be out, we borrowed some ladders from the station staff and the two lights were fixed.

The Platform lights on BBS will be repaired a week on Sunday, I got the date wrong for the Steam Gala.

The scaffold was then loaded onto the next train back to BBS and then stored away, a brew was then taken after a full day again.

Thought you said that our clock down at Baron St. caught up to the right time when you plugged it back in.

Is next weekend really the best time to do it? It's an event day, having scaffold on the platform is always a concern, even more so on days where passenger load is likely to be increased. There is also the likely addition of stalls on the platform which cause passengers to bunch up in areas and restrict free passenger flow somewhat.

Quite right I thought the Steam event was the week after, we will repair the lights the week after next.
