The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 6-3-2011.

Post by asbibby »

On Saturday Jonathan was present in our workshop applying mahogany stain to the wood surround of the Ray Butcher Bury clock, the face of this clock requires renovating, it needs sanding down, painting then new roman numerals applying to the clock face.
If anyone out there is adapt at this sort of work please get in touch with the electrical volunteers any Sunday.
Jonathan then got to work on finishing off the Castlecroft Victorian lamp head which required the four panels sealing and the top painting, also finished renovating was the lamp fitting from underneath the canopy at Rawtenstall Station.

On Sunday Len, Jonathan, John and myself met in our workshop, first job as usual was to check out the fire alarm call points in BBS and The Trackside, Len and Jonathan did the checks, everything was fine and the tests were recorded.

I started to strip out the wiring from some of the carriage copper pins, after which we put them in a glass of vinegar to get rid of the grunge which they have accumalated over the years.
We then assembled around another ten refurbished carriage plug components and then fitted heat shrink tubing to the finished units, using the electrical paint stripper heat gun.

Neil from BBS booking office paid us a visit, requesting we look at a failed flurescent unit, this turned out to be a burnt out starter, once replaced the unit worked fine.

Jonathan and myself took our electrical tools, two piece ladder and the newly refurbished Castlecroft lamp head to install the said lamp head adjacent to the red telephone box in Castlecroft Yard.
On installing the new lamp head we discovered that the isolating unit on the fuse unit was missing, we investigated the other five lamps and found that three of them had these parts missing, a quick trip back to our workshop and we sourced some replacements for the fused units.

It had been reported to us that one of the hand dryers in the new ladies toilet block on platform three/four was not working, John and Len went to investigate and found out that the cam timer motor was not working, the unit was removed, a new one will be ordered.

A task to be done at a later date is to test and repair four of the electrical outlets underneath the platforms in BBS, two of which have no power and two require refixing. These outlets provide power to the onboard battery chargers in the carriages, next week should provide an opportunity to test and make good this problem.

A member of BBS station staff came to see us and asked if we could have a look in their mess room as there was a lack of electricity, the problem was soon sorted as a main circuit breaker had tripped on overload, this was reset and all was well.

That was it for another Sunday in the life of The ELR Electrical Volunteers, tune in next week!
