The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 12th. September 2010

Post by asbibby »

Saturday saw Jonathan working on the carriage plugs, stripping and cleaning the cases ready for painting.

On Sunday a full compliment of volunteers met up in our workshop, John one of our radio hams was going to go down to Sheringham to a radio club meeting in his old army camp, but in the end he decided after checking his maps and the mileage to give it a miss.

The BBS shop reported that one of the security fluorescents had failed, the tube was blackened so that was changed along with a new starter.

The fire alarm system was checked out in The Trackside by Len and Jonathan and duly logged.
Clive had ordered and took delivery of six new fire alarm call points for Bury Bolton Street Station, one call point had gone faulty, so we decided to replace them all with more modern ones as fitted in The Trackside.
Len, Clive and myself changed all six call points and tested each one to ensure all was well.

Meanwhile John and Jonathan were busy checking out a fault which had been reported to Jonathan on Saturday by Roger in the 26B shop, one of the newly installed second hand double light fitting was tripping out the RCB in the shop, it had been isolated ready for us to check it out.
The unit was taken down and inspected and was found to have a faulty choke, a second hand choke was found, fitted and then tested before re-installation.

On Saturday Jonathan had got all the tools and new water heater for installation at Rawtenstall West signal box, Clive had sourced all the plumbing parts from home, then Clive and Len caught the next available train up to Rawtenstall. The old rubber water fill heater was removed and the new automatic water heater was plumbed in and tested, they had lunch at Rawtenstall before returning to BBS.

John, Jonathan and myself were busy with carriage plug refurbishment, stripping old wiring out of the copper pins, drilling and tapping the refurbished carriage shells and reassembling the carriage plugs with newly wired and soldered pins, before meggering and continuity testing.

A late lunch was then taken before going over to Castlecroft to have a look at the vintage vehicles on display, we then went over to see the rest of the historical vehicles in BBS car park, some brilliant cars there!

Next week there is to be a training session on carriage electrical maintenance in the Carriage & Wagon workshop with Simon Riley, should be interesting, watch this space.

All that done today we had a brew and packed it in for the day.

You have to be a member of the ELR to work on the railway so that you are covered by insurance, if you are please contact Malcolm Vickers for permission at Bury Bolton Street Station telephone 0161 764 7790, we will be in our workshop underneath the stairs at BBS 09:00 hrs. before going down to the C & W workshop.

It is a maintenance training session on the electrical systems, so we will have to see what is involved when we get there.
