The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 23-9-2012.

Post by asbibby »

Jonathan was in on Saturday carrying on with the mammoth task of PAT testing, it was the turn of the mess room at BBS and the guards office in the undercroft.
This job is going to take some time, me thinks it will be like painting the Forth road bridge.

Sunday saw Jonathan, John, Len, Simon and myself meet up in our workshop at BBS, first task for Len and Jonathan was the testing of the fire alarm call points in The Trackside and BBS concourse. All was well and the findings were logged.

Simon then asked if we would work on the Santa carriage again to try to finish it off, this job has entailed rewiring the entire ETH (Electrical Train Heating) system.

We are just about breaking this jobs back, but the problem now is that three out of the four mechanical/steam operated switches have contact problems. To get over this we have temporarily strapped the switches out.
Two of the mechanical operated heat on/off cables in the carriage will not turn the switches because they are seized up, these will need to be looked at by the C & W staff.

Lunch was then taken and on the way back from the Carriage & Wagon shed we had a shufty at the tremendous amount of work being done by staff & volunteers on stripping, painting and re-roofing of the BBS canopy.
Two thirds of the canopy have been stripped of all the old wood and roofing felt, the exposed roof spars are being painted along with the tongue and groove wood paneling at the bottom end of the canopy.
A start has also been made on fitting the glazing bars, all this work being done under not ideal conditions.

We then got back to the Santa carriage wiring down at the Carriage & Wagon works, we will carry on with this job next week when it should be finished.
Deep in the heart of Swinetown.
