The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 24-6-2012.

Post by asbibby »

Jonathan came in again on Saturday to strip down and repaint some bulkhead light fittings which we had found in our workshop last week.
These will be fitted later on in the waiting shelters at Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall Stations.

On Sunday I was joined by Jonathan, Clive, Chris and Simon the full time ELR Electrician.
First job as usual was to do the statutory fire alarm call points tests in The Trackside cafe/pub and Bury Bolton Street Station all was well and the findings recorded in the appropriate log books.

Simon asked us if we would help out restoring the mains power to the diesel mess room which has been moved to it's temporary position in the museum yard.
The diesel mess room and workshop area is having work done to it, before it is restored to a more pleasant area.
The mains cable from the new diesel mess room was too short to be terminated into a new mains distribution box which has been supplied to provide power to the new position and eventual postion of the mess room.
A five metre length of suitable cable was sourced, an appropriate jointing kit, heat shrink tube, the cable jointing tools and gas powered heat gun all carried across to the work area.
One half of the team jointed the cables whilst the other half of the team terminated the new cable into the distribution box.
We left the resin in the joint to go off and retreated back to the workshop for a brew and some lunch.

An hour later we returned to the diesel mess room job and shrunk down the heat shrink wrap over the joint, this gives the joint good mechanical protection, the mains was then restored to the mess room.

Next task was to replace fluorescent tubes in both BBS stair wells and overbridge, we replaced about twelve tubes, improving the lighting somewhat as in twelve years that I have been at the Railway, I don't recall replacing any before.
Three of the fittings in the stair wells will have to have some more work done on them out of hours, due to us having to use the scaffold tower to gain access to replace one or two ballast units and starters.

The remote switching of the Summerseat Station lights was then disscussed with us being given some of the components to finish off this job namely the power supply unit and the countdown timer. The power supply unit will be fitted in our electrical cabinet and the timer in Ramsbottom signal box, Clive did some wiring and testing of the power supply unit to prove it fit for purpose. The job should be finished off this Summer.

Whats in store next week, possibly some more work on the replacement of the carriage plugs etc.
Deep in the heart of Swinetown.
