The Sunday Electrical Volunteers Report 15-1-2012.

Post by asbibby »

On Saturday Jonathan came in to strip and paint some station light fittings, along with testing two photoflood outside lights, that had showed up in our workshop.
One light fitting will be stripped and refurbished after it was found to be working OK, the other fitting was found to have burnt out electrics and scrapped, apart from the front cover and glass which will be used as a spare.

Sunday came along and what a beautifull day it turned out to be, Jonathan was first in followed by myself. We tested out the fire alarm call points as usual in The Trackside and the booking hall, everything was satisfactory and the results recorded in the fire alarm log book.

Len was next to arrive after recovering from a nasty chest infection, a brew was taken whilst we waited for Clive and John to arrive.

The next train up to Heywood Station was at 11:00 hours, so we gathered up all the kit we would need to take down the Christmas lights at Heywood and pack them away, we have been given some old sturdy boxes to keep the light strings in.

Jonathan and myself decided to go up to the carriage and wagon shed before the train to Heywood arrived to see if there was any carriages in need of refurbished carriage plugs.
We were asked if we could help out eventually with the rewire of the brake van which is being completely rebuilt in the C & W shed, a nice different job for Spring/Summer.

After returning to BBS we loaded all our gear onto the DMU for the short trip up to Heywood Station, on arriving we set off at the far end of the Station platform to dismantle the two strings of Christmas lights.
We had brought with us some spare coloured bulb covers as we knew that some of the coloured lights were out of sequence, this was rectified and the two stings packed away safely in the new storage boxes.

Whilst previously up at Heywood Station, we had noticed that the trace heating element and insulation material around the water valve on the parachute water tower, had been removed.
On inspection today, water was streaming out of a crack in the water valve, this will have to be replaced before the trace heating element and insulation material is replaced.
The black Five 45407 took us all back to BBS for some lunch, a warm and a welcome brew.

One of the signalling staff Mike, caught sight of us in our workshop and asked if we could have a look at a halogen heater which had been brought in from Rawtenstall West Box. Clive checked out the heater and found that the main on/off switch was faulty, this was sustituted for another switch and all was well again. Off went Mike with his rapidly repaired heater to ease the pain of the cold at Rawty West.

The next Christmas lights to be dismantled and stored away, were the platform two Christmas lights along with the lights outside of The Trackside.

There was a lot of filming support vehicles at the bottom end of BBS car park on Sunday, apparently they were filming for ten days in the old Barclays Bank in Bury, not on our railway.

We then packed all our gear away in the workshop, before having a final brew and a mince pie and calling it a day.
See you all next week, the Sunday sparks.
Deep in the heart of Swinetown.
