The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 20-3-2011.

Post by asbibby »

Jonathan, John, Clive and myself turned up today only Len was not here due to him still feeling unwell, get well soon Len.

The first task was to check out the fire alarm call points in The Trackside and BBS Station, all was well and the findings recorded.

We arranged to test and refix the electrical 240v supplies on platforms two, three and four at BBS, but we were thwarted by the newly refurbished diner stock being stabled in platform two, what a superb job has been done on the stock by the full time paid staff and the C & W volunteers.
On platform four the class twenty was stabled with the air braked stock on air brake training, which appeared to be going nowhere for the time being.
The service train on platform three had a problem with the leading carriage which had to be uncoupled and removed, so we abandoned the electrical tests and caught the service train up to Summerseat Station to check out the platform lights control equipment.
The Platform lights control electronics, the overide switch, the times selected and sequences on the electronic timer and the photocell, all of which checked out satisfactory, so we caught the next train back to BBS.

Lunch was then taken before going down to the joiners shop to ask Keith if he could cut out from a piece perspex which Ray Butcher had supplied a replacement protective front cover for his clock.
Clive has completed the software for the clock and is in the process of fine tuning the processer software to an acceptable tolerance.

Jonathan and myself had a chat with the owner of the LMS parcel/brake vehicle in the Carriage and Wagon shed regarding the carriage plugs on his 1937/8 vehicle, they are in a sorry state. With his permission we removed the old plugs, two BR, one GWR and one LMS, we returned to our workshop and sourced two LMS refurbished plug leads and started to manufacture two more LMS plugs, we will finish off these two in the next week or so.
Two of the newly refurbished LMS carriage plugs were returned to the owner of the parcel/brake vehicle the same afternoon, how is that for service!

John then tested some fluorescent fittings which had been left for us to test.

Clive and John had been busying themselves stripping off the old wiring from the copper pins from some of the yet to be refurbished carriage plugs, this is quite a time consuming job entailing warming the copper pins with our gas blow torch, then knocking out all the old solder before cleaning all the years of grunge from the pins.

Jonathan and I then stripped down the four plugs we had cut off from the LMS parcel/brake vehicle, these plugs are about seventy odd years old, we managed to salvage two carriage shells, all the copper pins and the insulation blocks, the two shells will be stripped of all the layers of paint and aluminium corrosion. See the ELR web site Fliker photos for a before and after shots of the carriage plugs.
