The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 6-6-2010.

Today Jonathan, Len Clive and myself met in our workshop, I checked out the railway clock which I had put on test last Sunday, It is keeping good time so we passed it off as a good working clock. We await somewhere suitable to install it.
A check was then done on the fire alarm system in BBS concourse and the Trackside Pub.
We then decided to collect our tools and go to the loco works at Baron Street to see if a particular road was clear in the shed, to enable us to erect our mobile tower scaffold so that we could change two fluorescent light fittings which were life expired.
We were in luck the stock had just been drawn out of the road we needed to work in, the 26B Group had the stock removed so that they could work on their recently refurbished boiler from their Black Five locomotive, we all look forward to seeing this engine back on ELR metals again.
The two old rusted fittings were soon removed and replaced with two new fittings, duly tested we made our way back to BBS via the Carriage sidings and Carriage & Wagon workshop.
We inspected all the carriages to check which carriages had refurbished 24volt plugs fitted and which had not, we then entered all this information on our computer using an Excel database in our workshop, so far ten carriages have been done, that equates to forty plugs.
The plugs are taken off awaiting restoration carriages, they are stripped down, the old wiring removed, screws drilled out, insulating blocks removed, copper pins taken out and thoroughly cleaned, then the aluminium shells are stripped of years of verdigris and old paint. The shells are then painted, new cable cut to length and rewired, then tested. This process takes about four hours for each plug, volunteers for this job please form an orderly queue.
There are four plugs on each carriage so this is going to take some time.
After lunch Len & Jonathan changed a D type light in the ladies toilets and investigated a faulty fluorescent fitting in the mess room on platform 3/4, a new fitting will be installed next week.
We received a report from Townsend Fold signal box asking us to check out their electrical water heater which had failed, this had recently been installed and was working when fitted, again we will check this out next week.

There is also an electrical water heater in the P'Way mess room in the Undercroft that was installed new about three months ago but has not worked for for about 11 weeks out of the twelve.

Probably suffering from the same problem as the one at Townsend Fold - somebody used it! If it had been left alone, it would not be faulty now.

Hello sparky boys,
I know that you spotted our Sunday gang on Blue/ Grey TSO 4232 today. I haven't checked her coach end plugs but some time in the future she will need a working set so please do your stuff for us. She is on the buffer stops at CS1 South end as you know.
Your co-operation is always gratefully received.
Visitors are welcome without prior appointment, particularly if they are offering cake or biscuits (they must be dark chocolate though). Standards must be maintained at all costs.

XT Mike, We would need to gain access to the P/W mess room, as we only work on Sundays, If you could arrange access we will check it out.

Hi RMB, we have previously removed all the plugs from the to be restored carriages to enable us to refurbish them, so when the carriage is ready to receive the plugs we will fit them, no problem.
