The Electrical Volunteers Report Sunday 12-02-2017.

Post by asbibby »

Today the electrical team consisted of Clive, Len, Jonathan and myself, the weather was a bit parky today so after a swift brew we again looked at the speedo generator off the Bury Standard 4 Group engine. We could not get any voltage out of the generator since it has been rebuilt with a secondhand coil and magnets stripped from a DMU Smiths speedometer.
The DMU generator worked before we stripped it down so it looks like something as gone wrong in the process of fitting and modifying the unit to fit in the Steam engine generator case. :?
More investigation will need to be carried out to see why it is not generating the required maximum voltage of 38 volts.

It was then decided to catch the next train to Rawtenstall Station with some spares to see if we could find out what the problem was with one of the platform lights, the fourth one from the Bury end.
On arrival at Rawtenstall Station it had started to snow and the wind was bitterly cold, we obtained the ladders from the cafe/pub to gain access to the lamp after testing that the fuse was good. The lamp was changed and after getting the station lights switched on the lamp was still not lighting.
We have had a similar problem before, so decided that the fault was probably the bulb holder.
On arrival back in our workshop in Bury Bolton Street Station we brought down from our stores a spare lamp head which required a new screw type bulb holder fitting. A replacement bulb holder was found and fitted then tested to ensure it was working satisfactory, this unit will be installed at Rawtenstall Station next week, with a bit of luck and better weather.

A final brew and we then we finished off the mince pies left over from last week/(Christmas) !!!!
Deep in the heart of Swinetown.
